What changed?
OpenAI’s August 2026 enterprise research describes a shift from asking AI for answers to delegating work that produces a usable result. Its examples include agents gathering information and creating files for people to review. The research also reports adoption outside engineering, including sales and marketing.
This is a vendor’s view of its own customer base, rather than a census of every business. Even so, it highlights an important product direction: AI is increasingly being offered as a participant in a workflow, not only a conversation window.
What does that mean in plain English?
Consider a weekly client update. A basic chatbot might help rewrite the message. An agent-style workflow could assemble approved project notes, organise the key points and prepare a draft report. A person still needs to check whether the report reflects what actually happened and whether it is ready to share.
The useful question is therefore specific: which part of a repeatable task could AI prepare well enough to reduce the total effort, including review?
Our take: start with a bounded task
For a small team, a useful first experiment is an internal deliverable with a clear finish line. Choose a task such as producing a draft meeting summary from approved notes. Define the inputs, expected format and reviewer before trying to automate the whole process.
- Set a clear outcome: describe what a finished, useful result should contain.
- Limit access: connect only the information required for that task.
- Keep an approval point: review work before it reaches customers or changes business records.
- Measure the complete job: count corrections and review time as well as drafting time.
A faster first draft is only useful if the final result is accurate and the workflow is easier to manage. A modest pilot gives a team evidence before expanding the scope.
