What the research looked at
Anthropic’s AI Fluency Index examined observable collaboration behaviours in 9,830 multi-turn Claude conversations from one week in January 2026. The report associated iterative conversations with more behaviours such as clarifying goals and questioning answers.
It also found that conversations producing finished-looking outputs showed less visible evaluation on some measures. The study is observational and limited to its sample: it does not prove causation, represent all AI users or capture checks that people perform outside the chat.
A polished answer still needs a second look
A document can look complete before its assumptions have been examined. For everyday users, our takeaway is to separate two jobs: helping AI understand the request, and deciding whether the result is fit to use.
Suppose you ask for an event announcement. A well-structured draft is useful, but someone still needs to verify the venue, date, contact details and any promise made to the audience. Those checks should happen even when the writing reads confidently.
A simple routine to practise
- Explain the purpose. State who the work is for and what it should help them do.
- Provide the essentials. Supply approved facts and identify any information that is still missing.
- Review the draft. Look for unsupported claims, gaps and wording that changes the meaning.
- Refine with feedback. Explain what needs to change rather than asking vaguely for something better.
- Check before sharing. Confirm the facts that matter using the original material.
This routine is deliberately simple enough to apply to emails, summaries, outlines and presentations. It keeps attention on the quality of the completed work instead of the cleverness of the prompt.
Build confidence through small tasks
Start with work you understand well enough to judge. Keep a note of recurring errors and the context that helped prevent them. That creates a practical learning record you can share with colleagues.
